Common use

Mydriacyl (tropicamide) is prescribed for pupil dilation (mydriasis) during eye examinations or procedures. It works by relaxing the muscles of the iris, allowing the pupil to enlarge and improving the ophthalmologist’s view of the internal structures of the eye.

Dosage and direction

Mydriacyl is applied topically as eye drops. Follow your doctor’s instructions for the number of drops and frequency. Usually, one or two drops are instilled into the affected eye(s) 15–30 minutes before an eye examination. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or other surfaces.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, eye injury, eye infection, or a history of allergies to eye medications. Avoid driving or operating machinery until vision returns to normal. Remove contact lenses before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Contraindications

Do not use Mydriacyl if allergic to tropicamide or any component of the eye drops. Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or a history of eye trauma or surgery.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include temporary blurred vision, stinging, burning, or mild eye irritation. Serious side effects may include increased eye pressure, severe allergic reactions, headache, or rapid heartbeat. Seek medical attention if serious symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

Mydriacyl may interact with other eye medications, especially those affecting intraocular pressure. Inform your doctor of all eye drops or systemic medications you are using.

Missed dose

For diagnostic use, missed doses are generally not applicable. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for scheduled applications.

Overdose

Overuse may cause severe eye irritation, redness, or systemic effects such as rapid heartbeat or flushing. Seek medical attention if symptoms occur.

Storage

Store Mydriacyl at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
